I definitely went over board this time. I must have been really hungry when I made this purchase, because in addition to ordering the harvest box, I also ordered quite a few other things:

CSA Harvest Box

  • baby lettuce mix – a bag of delicate lettuce leaves
  • spinach – one pound of crisp spinach leaves
  • lacinato kale – also called dinosaur or black kale
  • asparagus
  • radishes
  • scallions
  • strawberries

CSA A La Carte items

  • english cucumbers
  • sugar snap peas
  • yellow hothouse tomatoes
  • scallions (Oops. This was a mistake. I guess I should have looked more closely at the contents of the harvest box. Not sure what I’m going to do now with 2 bunches of scallions.)
  • red swiss chard
  • farm-grown shiitake mushrooms
  • strawberries (I knew the 1 quart that came with the harvest box would be gone in no time.)

This week I decided to opt out of Star Hollow Farm’s CSA Harvest Box and create my own. I love all the amazing late spring greens, so I ordered lettuce mix, curly kale, stir-fry greens and mixed chard. I also ordered portabella mushrooms, Tuscarora radishes, Austrian fingerling potatoes, asparagus, english cucumbers, hothouse tomatoes, and eggs. I am looking forward to making grilled portabella mushroom burgers, asparagus, and salad; sandwiches with cream cheese, radishes, cucumbers, tomatoes and greens; and a few Indian dishes with potatoes, kale and chard. I may have gone a bit overboard with my order (I was quite excited and eager to cook when I filled out my rather large order for 2 people). This week will be a challenge, but I’m looking forward to it.

Stir-Fry Greens Mix (6 oz)

Star Hollow Farm’s Homegrown Lettuce Mix (6 oz)

Mixed Swiss Chard (6 oz)

Green Curly Kale (1 bun)

Tuscarora Radishes (1 bun)

Portabella Mushrooms (1 lb)

Hothouse Tomatoes (2 lb)

English Cucumber (3)

Austrian Fingerling Potatoes (1 lb)

Windmill Meadows Free Range Eggs (1 dozen)

apples, bibb lettuce, carrots, chives, claytonia, dill, fingerling potatoes, garlic greens, gold carrots, golden delicious, granny smith, honey crisp, mesculin greens, mizuna, parsnips, purple carrots, star hollow farm, yellow carrots

Spring is here! While most CSA subscribers in the region do not start receiving their weekly bounty until the beginning of June, Star Hollow Farm started this weekend. As a Star Hollow Farm CSA member, every Wednesday from the beginning of April through end of December I will be able to order a weekly CSA harvest box and additional a la carte items (produce and dairy).

Here’s what was in my April 3, 2010 harvest box:

Baby Mizuna (a variety of Japanese mustard, usually served raw in salad mix)

Claytonia (aka miner’s lettuce that grows wild in California, usually served raw in a salad)

Mixed Carrots (yellow, orange and purple varieties)

Parsnips

Onions

Bibb Lettuce

Romaine Lettuce

Fingerling Potatoes

Granny Smith, Golden Delicious & Honey Crisp Apples

I also ordered:

Tuscarora Mesclun

Garlic Greens

Chives

Dill

Grilled Pizza with Onions, Garlic & Kalamata Olives

There is nothing like the taste and flavor of grilled pizza. Grilling the pizza may add a few more steps, but it’s definitely worth it. In the middle of the summer harvest, try adding grilled zucchini and yellow squash and grilled red bell pepper instead of the jarred roasted red bell pepper. Also try experimenting with different types of cheese and other toppings, such as thinly sliced bosc pear. Serve with a side salad, such as Roasted Beet Salad with Oranges and Raspberry Vinaigrette, and a glass of red wine. (*Indicates Star Hollow Farm produce.)

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 prepared pizza dough, divided into 3
  • 1 batch of basic pizza sauce
  • 3 medium organic yellow onions*
  • 4-6 cloves organic garlic*
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup kalamata olives, pitted and sliced
  • 1/2 cup roasted red bell peppers, drained and sliced (optional)
  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese (or a combination of freshly grated parmesan and feta; or fresh cheese curds from your local italian market)
  • Freshly ground salt and pepper
  • Cooking spray

DIRECTIONS

  1. Prepare pizza dough and basic pizza sauce according to directions.
  2. Prepare grill (for a gas grill, turn on high; after 5 minutes, scrape clean with a grill brush; turn heat down to medium-high).
  3. Carefully peel and slice onions into 1/2 inch thick slices. Lightly coat both sides of each slice with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Set aside and roughly chop.
  4. Peel garlic and place in the center of a 8 inch by 8 inch piece of aluminum foil along with 1 tbsp oil. Carefully form a little pouch with the foil.
  5. Grill onions until tender and evenly browned (about 10 minutes, 5 minutes on each side). Meanwhile, place pouch of foil with garlic on a corner of the grill. Grill until garlic is cooked through and very tender (about 10-20 minutes). Set aside and roughly chop.
  6. Using a rolling pin, roll out a third of the pizza dough on a large cutting board (if the dough sticks to the board, dust the cutting board with a little flour). Coat one side of the dough, evenly, with cooking spray. Place the rolled out dough (cooking spray side down) on the grill.
  7. Pre-cook the crust: Grill for 1-2 minutes, or until the cooking spray side of the dough forms a crust and starts to turn golden brown. Quickly and carefully spray the uncooked (top side) of the crust with cooking spray, and flip the crust, so that the top side is now touching the grill surface. Cook another 1-2 minutes, or until the crust just starts to turn golden brown. Remove from the grill and set aside.
  8. Repeat for the remaining 2/3 of the dough.
  9. Top the pre-cooked crust with sauce, grilled onions and garlic, kalamata onions, and slices of mozzarella cheese. Place on grill on top of a long piece of foil, to prevent the crust from burning on the grill and to give the cheese enough time to melt. Cover the grill, and cook for about 5-10 minutes or until the cheese melts (note: check often to make sure the bottom of the crust does not burn.)

CSA Order – Star Hollow Farm

CSA, star hollow farm

I just placed my second order for a CSA Harvest Box, eggs, and cheese at Star Hollow Farm’s Online Market. I’m really excited about eating locally produced foods again. With all my work related travel I have missed quite a few Saturday deliveries and the Sunday Dupont Circle Farmers Market. I felt so guilty last weekend buying zucchini, yellow squash, bell peppers, avocadoes and other summer vegetables at Whole Foods…in the middle of winter. Well, no more unseasonal veggies for me.

This Saturday I will be able to pick up the following at Star Hollow Farm’s Adams Morgan pick-up site:

  • 2-week CSA Harvest Box (1 head of lolla rosa lettuce, 1 head of bibb lettuce, micro greens, claytonia, mixed beets, mixed carrots, onions, parsnips, white and La Ratte fingerling potatoes, red delicious and pink lady apples) – $23.10
  • 1 dozen free range, free-roaming, pasured hen brown eggs – $3.25
  • 1 (8 oz) package sharp cheddar cheese (Whispering Brook Farm, aged more than one year and made with raw milk) – $4.00
  • 5 heads hardneck garlic – $0.80 each
  • 1 (4 lb) butternut squash – $4.80
  • 2 lb onions – $3.40

For more information about Star Hollow Farm, check out their blog: Star Hollow Farm CSA Blog.
